In their recently published study, ‘Volatile Vinyl: The New Shower Curtain’s Chemical Smell’, The Center for Health, Environment & Justice reports that PVC-containing shower curtains can emit more than 100 chemicals in the air. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) shower curtains contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds), phthalates, lead, and organotins. These chemicals can damage the respiratory system, liver, kidney, central nervous system, and have been connected to diseases such as cancer.
